Of Rioters and Royals Review

Hi everyone. It’s been a while since I have posted anything. Last week was crazy because it was the week before spring break and the teachers were trying to get lectures in because after next week there is 2 weeks and then we take finals! Anyway, this up coming week I’m on spring break and there is so much stuff I have to do! I have to start studying for tests the week after I go back, prepare for finals, write a literary research paper *ewww*, and things around the house like paint and gardening. THEN, on top on that I need to read a couple of books to review, write so reviews that I’ve finished recently, and type out some tags to keep on hand. So in other words I going to be busy. So much for resting! Plus I have to wake up during the week each morning at 6 to get ready to take my sister to the bus stop. Anyway back to the review!

Of Rioters and Royals by M. L. Greye

*I received an ecopy of this in exchange of a review*

Synopsis: “Emry is a Royal – a princess of Enlennd. As is tradition, she must have a knight at her side as her protector. The only way to appoint one is through The Trials. Her Challengers from the five regions of Enlennd must compete for the infamous title of Princess’s Knight. The problem, though, is that the people of Enlennd are split into two categories: Rioters and Royals. Finding the perfect knight may be the last of her worries. War is coming to Enlennd. Declan is a Rioter. An upriser. An anarchist. He mistrusts the Jewels – the sovereign family of Enlennd. Yet, he is offering himself up as a Challenger in The Trials. The Mistress, leader of the Rioters, has a mission for him. The first step is for him to become the Princess’s Knight. He is ready for the task, until he actually meets Emry and discovers that betraying her would be much more difficult than he’d thought.”

If you like:

  • Royals
  • Strong Female Lead
  • Powers (think something on the lines of The Darkest Minds where each color has a different ability)
  • A good love story that isn’t cheesy
  • Possibly Betrayal
  • All the feels

Then you might want to read this book!

Of Rioters and Royals is such a fun and captivating story that’ll have you staying up all night, or if you’re like me until 11 pm then promptly picking it back up after I made a cup of coffee . There are several elements of the story that I absolutely love like the powers, the “Pair” which is basically the equivalent of finding a soulmate, and Emry trying to bring her country together.

The type of power or abilities person has depend on their eye color; the base color is the main power while flecks or rings are influential abilities. Some of the powers are speed, controlling and blending in with shadows, controlling the elements (fire, wind, and water), and so many others.

As much I love the whole “MC finding out these supernatural abilities and trying to figure them out along with this new world”, it was so much fun reading about Emry when she knows how to use her powers and isn’t afraid of them for the most part. Let me tell you, Emry is not the type of person you want to mess with because she is willing to do anything for the sake of her kingdom and people. She is a natural born leader, and it shows through her actions and choices.

Declan is the perfect balance to Emry because he isn’t afraid of Emry’s powers, and he lets her rule and makes choices as she sees fit because he has the unconditional and unwavering trust in her that even her family doubts at time.

I find that those types of relationships are one of most interesting to read about because the characters actual work together and help the other instead of going behind the other character’s back to do it a different way.

My favorite part of this story might be the thought of the pairing of couples. A pair is basically like a mate in the fae world where a couple complement each other in every way possible and makes the other whole. These couples are a lot stronger together and are able to use elements of the other’s abilities. They are also to feel emotions and hear thoughts and communicate with the pair.

I feel that whenever there is a love that strong and you are able to feel your partner in every part of your being is so amazing and beautiful that it is so beautiful. P.s. if you haven’t noticed by now, I am a SUCKER for a story with a good romance and relationship line.

In so many sci-fi/fantasy/dystopian stories one of the main tropes is the MC being the essential piece to this huge revolution that allows the lesser people to over throw the government or leading body to bring about a much needed change. However, with this story the Royals (leading body) and the Rioters (common people) don’t realize that the leader is one of the same and is actually trying to unite the two groups and have a functional country that gets along rather than being at odds.

Of Rioters & Royals is a fast paced, adventure/romance story that will captivate any fantasy reader wanting to jump into a book with a great storyline! With strong, unbreakable characters like Emry and Declan, it’s hard not to want to cheer them on as they face numerous challenges to save not only the castle and the throne but the people from the threat of war.

Happy reading until next time,
