A BODYGUARD determined to keep her alive.

A PRINCE forced to execute his father’s brutal laws.
A PRISONER used to keep him compliant.

A WORLD on the brink of war.

In one horrible night, Clare goes from kitchen maid to royal decoy. She has three months to become the princess’s perfect double so she can ensure her betrothal to an enemy prince. Desperate to survive, Clare throws herself into self-defense training, taught by her distractingly attractive bodyguard. The danger increases when a ruthless assassin begins stalking her, intent on ending the tenuous peace.

Across the northern mountains, Prince Grayson is his father’s ultimate weapon. He carries out the king’s harsh orders because the one person he cares about is his father’s prisoner. Grayson’s silent obedience is tested when his father plans to exploit the marriage alliance between two of their greatest enemies. If Grayson submits, the blood of thousands will spill. If he resists, the girl who means everything to him will die.

The fate of Eyrinthia hangs in the balance. Some want peace. Some want war. All will be thrown into chaos.

Y’all this book… it’s nothing short of an amazing book. I read it in about a day. With its twists and turns, I was trying to figure of how these characters are intertwined and found it next to impossible to put down.

Clare is a young girl who is caring for her younger brothers by working in the kitchen in the palace for the royal family when one night she comes across the princess and her guards getting ambushed. Clare decides to step in to help when the princess is about to be hit. Despite her bravery for saving the princess, Clare is detained in the prison. The commander comes to her telling her about being charged for treason unless she agrees to become to princess’s decoy.

“One thing I’ve learned is that the worst regrets don’t come from what we said or did. They come from what we didn’t say or do.”

With no other option, Clare agrees to save not only herself but also her younger brothers knowing that they could have the opportunity of education and not having to worry about making ends meet.

Clare leaves for the palace and discovers that everyone has their motivated for the things that they do. She takes lessons to learn how to become more like Princess Senere and training like any other person who works closely to the royal family.

“Never helpless. Those words sank inside her, pushing against the rage and fear — the powerlessness and shame — that had been overpowering her. Something else took up the space left behind. Strength. She didn’t quite know how he’d managed it.”

Despite the rough start with her job pretending to be someone who’s completely different from herself. She starts to become friends with her maids and some of the guards assigned to her.

“The good and bad were tangled together. Her family was cared for, yet she’d lost them…She was learning more than she’d ever dreamed, but she was treading the edge of a cliff—the slightest mistake would cause her to fall.”

Clare discovers parts of herself that might not have been discovered if she had not taken this position. She’s more outspoken towards the things she cares about and is able to defend herself better. She’s gain knowledge about politics and some of the ins and outs that goes along with that.

As she continues to spend time at the palace, she becomes closer to one of the guards Bennick. Bennick has felt something towards Clare from the first time he say her saving the princess. He’s taken it as his personal mission to protect her and train her to face any situation. As they continue to spend so much time together, feels start to blossom despite them knowing it wouldn’t work out because of their positions in the palace.

Y’all, Bennick stole my heart pretty quickly and the more that he was present in the book, the harder I fell. He’s loyal and has those brief moments when he allows his wall to come down long enough for you to be a swooning puddle of goo. He’s had a difficult past that still haunts him making him work harder to not become that thing he despises.

“You’re not going to die, Clare. I won’t allow that to happen. I’ll defy the fates if I have to, but I will keep you alive.”

Then on the flip side, we meet the prince of another kingdom who comes from a family of heartless people. This prince has been molded to his father’s wishes and is one of the most feared person within his kingdom not only because of his heartless but because he’s one of the best fighters.

Diving into not only Clare and her family’s story but also Bennick and the other prince’s, it’s heartbreaking to see they things that they’ve endured but amazing to see how they’ve overcame those obstacles (or still fighting them)!

In this fast paced book, you’ll be left wanting the next story!
