Books I’ve Bought because of the Book Community and Still Haven’t Read: Top Ten Tuesday

Hi everyone! It’s been a couple of weeks since I did a Top Ten Tuesday post and thought I’d do a twist on this weeks prompt “Books I Read Because Someone Recommended Them to Me” and talk about the books I’ve bought because of the lovely people of the book community and haven’t read!

TTT is a weekly meme hosted by thatartsyreadergirl.

I also posted a couple of reviews this weekend after not being able to read over the last month (Tin and Winter’s Guardian)

King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo

I joined to online book community a couple of years ago when KoS was coming out and just had to buy it shortly after it came out… not because of the reviews of how people loved it (because I seriously didn’t see that many reviews considering how hyped it was) but because it was everywhere on bookstagram. I bought this flipping book even though I’ve only read Shadow and Bone. I have all of Leigh’s YA books but haven’t ever read them.

Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas

I’ll tell you. The ONLY reason I bought this book was because I heard were a certain couple of the Night Court made an appearance. That’s the only reason why I bought that whopping thing of a book. I didn’t even make it all the way through EoS and bought KoA.

Serpent and Dove (and Blood and Honey) by Shelby Mahurin

Why did I buy Serpent and Dove you may be asking? Well, I heard that it has some spicy scenes if you catch my drift, and the majority of the book community loves the book. Then with Blood and Honey was coming out and there were a handful of book boxes doing special edition boxes, and I missed out on the US based ones, so I ended up getting the FairyLoot one. But unlike the other two books mentioned, I could see myself reading these books within the next couple of months.

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

You know, this is another one of those series that you kind of see everywhere. I have books 1, 2, and 4, and I’ve only gotten through the first 20ish pages of the first book. I’m not exactly sure why I got the books other than them being around so much on the internet.

V.E./Victoria Schwab

I have both books in the Savage Song Duology, the entire Shades of Magic Series, both of the books in The Tunnel of Bones series, and still haven’t read one of her books. I have a wide variety of genre and content that I don’t know where to start. I feel like overall Schwab is a well loved author in the community, and I’m kind of scared to start a book that so many people love.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Lani Taylor

I bought this book because it’s one of those books from back in the day that people read and talk about in passing, buy you really have no idea what it’s about. I bought it because it was at my local library sale a while back (not this year) and figured that since it was only a dollar, I didn’t have much to lose.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

This is another book similar to Daughter of Smoke and Bone as to why I bought it!

The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand

This is one YA Christmas book that everyone talks about during the holiday season! I’ve read the Lady Jane books that Cynthia has co-written and really enjoyed them, so I’m excited to read this book that’s a retelling of The Christmas Story!

The Wicked King, Queen of Nothing, and King of Elfhame by Holly Black

Why do I keep buying books to The Cruel Prince series when I didn’t really enjoy the first one? Well because I suffer from FOMO (fear of missing out). For some reason in the depths of my mind, I tell myself that I’m going to read these books and somehow fall in love with the like everyone else and be glad that I bought them.

Descendant of the Crane by Joan He

This is another book that came out when I first joined the book community, and I bought it because of all of the hype around an Asian MC in a ya fantasy book! I’ve heard mixed things about this book, so I’m not sure when I’m going to get to it.

What are some books you bought because of the online book community? Let me know below!

Happy reading until next week,

  1. Ah the FOMO is strong in the book community and it’s hard to not fall into the hole sometimes. I actually recently unhauled a heap of books I picked up bc of community hype that I realise just aren’t my thing!

If you are interested in the Stalking Jack the Ripper series, I personally loved the audiobooks for them. Sometimes the books are a little info-heavy and the audio makes it much more digestible imo.

    Loved the post. Happy reading!

  2. I probably owned four of VE Schwab’s books before I read my first one (I’ve now read This Savage Song and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue). I still own way more books by her than I’ve read. I buy them whenever I see them on sale for $1.99.

I owned The Descendant of the Crane for about a year before I read it (also got it on sale). I also got DoSaB and The Night Circus on sale, but still haven’t read them yet either.

We seem to have similar book shopping habits!

  3. There are so many great authors on this list and so many book buying choices I can relate to! I also bought KoA before finishing EoS years ago and STILL haven’t read it (oops). I really hope you get to read Schwab one day though, she’s really intimidating but a great author, and if you don’t like one her books there’ll definitely be a book you do from here – that’s the great thing about her work!

  4. I totally understand why each of these books is on your list. I share some with you. I definitely let bookstagram tell me which books to buy lol I still haven’t read KoS either. I own all of Bardugo’s books but I’ve only read the Shadow and Bone trilogy and Six of Crows. Oops

  6. I randomly came across V.E. Schwab recently (I was under a rock for a few years due to attending university so I’m a little behind) and ever since I found one of her books, I have been finding many amongst the blogging community and social media mentioning her… and I am just now reading my first book of hers. I am excited and interested to see how I like her books!

  7. I totally get this. I am such a sucker for buying books that I consistently am on a book buying ban! ( Except for second hand books, they always catch me out! )
